There’s always the constant struggle of looking good while getting your daily exercise, also taking off jewellery is sometimes such a pain at the gym. Can you really go from work to pilates or poolside without removing your stack?

Not all workouts are equal when it comes to jewellery safety. It honestly depends on the type of workout and the piece of jewellery you’re wearing. Let’s break down the dos and don’ts of working out with jewellery across different sports and exercises, so you can confidently go to the gym.

Yoga & Pilates

Don’t:  Wear anything with prongs or long chains. They may catch in some poses! Skip large rings, too as these can dig in or get tangled in your clothes during floor work.

Do: Stick to minimalist, close-fitting, and low-profile jewellery — nothing bulky that’ll dig into your skin in poses.

Tennis & Racket Sports

❌ Don’t: Wear loose rings which affect your racket grip or earrings that can snag on sweatbands or hair. Make sure your necklaces aren’t too long and avoid large hoops as they’ll swing and get in the way.

✅ Do: Wear a well-made tennis bracelet, it’s the ultimate tennis accessory! Just make sure it’s clasped properly. Looser pendant necklaces are great too. Want to learn more about the history of tennis bracelets? Read our article here.

✨ Tip: Make sure any bracelet fits tightly so it doesn’t slide around and become a distraction.

LiftingWeights

Don’t: Wear rings! Gripping dumbbells or barbells with rings on can cause scratching or even injury to your fingers. In fact we recommend removing all hand jewellery. Avoid pearls in general, because they’re far too delicate to withstand accidental dumbbell scratches.

Do: Opt for simple stud earrings or looser necklaces. Tight ones will restrict your movement, and you risk breaking them.

swimming (pool or ocean)

Don’t: Wear anything soft and porous, that means no pearls or opals, which can be damaged by chlorine or saltwater. Saltwater can also loosen stone settings, so avoid wearing gemstones.

✅  Do: Choose solid gold or platinum pieces only that don’t fall off easily. However, we’d recommend not wearing any jewellery. As the chlorine water might oxidise the alloys in 14k & 18k gold jewellery.

Tip: If you do swim in your jewellery, make sure to rinse your pieces with fresh water after and then use a cleaning solution.

Choose your jewellery as intentionally as you choose your workout gear. Knowing when to wear can make all the difference in keeping your pieces in good condition and your body safe.

Still unsure? If in doubt, always remove jewellery before exercising. Keeping a soft pouch in your gym bag to safely store it, just in case.
